Dr. Tam Cummings -Staging the Person with Dementia Chapter 5

In this VIRTUAL PRERECORDED session Dr. Cummings will discus understanding how dementias move through the brain and cause changes in behavior allows families and professionals to determine how much damage the brain has suffered. Identifying a person’s stage of dementia means knowing what behaviors or declines will follow, the amount of time the Person With Dementia is expected to be in each stage, how much brain tissue is remaining, and what to care plan for next.

Since People With Dementia don’t look physically ill until Stage Six of the Disease, the tools give us a better picture of the brain damage and resulting behaviors than relying on long term memory social skills.

Dr. Tam Cummings -What are the ADL's and How Does it Change Care- Chapter 6

In this VIRTUAL PRERECORDED session Dr. Cummings will discuss the Activities of Daily Living (ADL's). This session goes into detail about the ADLs, when we develop them, the complete steps and subsets of each one. At the end of the day, all we actually do for Persons With Dementia is their ADLs. Knowing how to do them correctly means less friction, less combative behavior, and a better outcome for residents and staff.

Dr. Tam Cummings -The Lobes of the Brain- Chapter 2

In this VIRTUAL PRERECORDED session, Dr. Tam Cummings will discuss the lobes of the brain. Dementias attack and destroy the brain during the course of the disease. As each lobe of the brain becomes damaged, the Person With Dementia will display different and unique behaviors indicating which lobe of the brain is being affected. Learn the lobes and what they should do and what they begin to do once cellular structures, neurotransmitters and normal function are impaired.

The behaviors displayed by a PWD are actually clues to where the disease is and tell us what to expect next. Knowing these changes in brain function helps prepare care plans that incorporate the anticipated decline. Staff members will begin to understand the behaviors are not purposeful but are a result of brain damage.

Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. The Effective Communication Strategies program of the Alzheimer’s Association was designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.

Dr. Tam Cummings - What is Dementia? Chapter 1

In this VIRTUAL PRERECORDED session, Dr. Tam Cummings will discuss Dementia. This first topic explains what dementia is and what is happening to the brain of a Person With Dementia (PWD). Using cancer diagnosis and care as an example, staff members will be able to identify the need to treat dementias as distinct diseases of the brain, with predictable stages and behaviors.

Five questions about dementia every caregiver needs to understand about care and also to explain the dementia disease process to families are discussed. These five questions address the majority of complaints and concerns from family members and guides them to understand the disease is destroying their loved one’s brain and therefore is the causation of decline in their loved one and not a failure of care.

How to Choose a Memory Care ... Just in case Family Care Partners in Dementia Networking and Ideas Exchange Group-

Moving into a memory care facility can be a significant transition for both the individual and their family. Preplanning allows for a smoother transition by addressing logistical concerns, such as arranging transportation, coordinating with healthcare providers, and familiarizing the individual with their new surroundings.

Preplanning encourages open communication with family members and loved ones. It allows for discussions about care preferences, financial planning, and future decisions regarding healthcare and quality of life. Involving family members in the preplanning process can help reduce stress and ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Have you found that the most helpful part of an educational event is often the Q&A portion of the program when care partners share their experiences and ideas?

Often, the most valuable information presented in family support groups, and dementia education comes from the other family care partners who have "been there and done that".

Are you a Newbie or a Pro? You can ask AND answer the questions along with a supportive network of people who are in varying stages of taking care of someone with dementia.

Each month, we will have a guest speaker and have time to network

Join us in person or via Zoom. Once registered you will receive the Zoom link.

Networking is the process of making connections and building relationships. These connections can provide you with advice and contacts, which can help you make informed care decisions and ask questions that you didn't know to ask.

PART ONE: What They Wish They Had Known Earlier: Setting Yourself and/or a Loved One Up for Success for Memory Care Options

AFA CARE CONNECTION WEBINAR-APRIL

April 11 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT

PART ONE: What They Wish They Had Known Earlier: Setting Yourself and/or a Loved One Up for Success for Memory Care Options

Knowledge is power in setting yourself up for success regarding senior living. This presentation will cover topics that Diane Trunecek has heard clients say that they wish they would have known years before they started looking into care options. Had they known some of the nuances that come with getting care as they age, they say that they would have taken action earlier to get their “ducks in a row.” This could have made a huge difference in the quality, type of care and lifestyle that they were able to choose for themselves and/or a loved one.

She will also cover professionals you should consider speaking with along your journey, care options and levels (e.g., memory care senior living communities vs. home care vs. skilled nursing), and some pros and cons of different care options from previous clients’ feedback, as well as the age-old question, “When is the right time to transition my loved one into Memory Care?”

PART TWO: AFA Excellence in Care Program

Learn about AFA’s EIC Program

AFA understands that the process for finding a trusted care setting for your loved one can be overwhelming, and we want to simplify the process for you. AFA’s Excellence in Care (EIC) program certifies memory care settings across the country based on a standard of excellence in dementia care. AFA evaluates care settings in person on the policies and protocols that promote the health, safety, and well-being of individuals living with dementia.

The Key Dementia Do's and Don'ts

Becky,

There are 3 CRITICAL mistakes dementia caregivers make.

Do you...

  1. Use logic, reason, or evidence with them?

  2. Correct them often, or do everything for them?

  3. React and struggle with their challenging behaviors?

If you said "yes" to any of these...

...and if you would like to know exactly what to do & say to easily stop refusals, anger, accusations, and phrases like “I Want to Go Home"...

Then you won't want to miss my first big workshop of the year:

It's a live workshop on Zoom where you will:

  • Learn the key “do’s and dont’s” - the big mistakes and what to do instead for:

    • When they refuse meals, showers, or brushing their teeth.

    • When they get agitated and blame you for things.

    • When they believe things that aren’t true.

    • When they want to leave or go home.

    • When they act inappropriately and/or get angry.

  • Watch role plays so you know exactly what to say & do in order to prevent, reduce, or stop these common challenging behaviors.

  • Get printable cheatsheets, guides, & activities each day you attend.

  • Learn easy-to-apply action steps, so you get results with your loved one or patients instead of wasting time and energy, allowing you to have more relief and freedom.

  • Get access to our workshop community of caregivers so you feel less alone & can bounce ideas off of your fellow participants.

The best part?  It doesn't cost you anything!

If this resonates with you, I'd be thrilled if you could join us.

Join us LIVE on Zoom from 7:30pm US ET, March 19-21 (Tuesday to Thursday)... if you can only come for 1 day, plan on coming to the grand finale on Thursday, March 21st.

Hope to see you there!!
Krista

P.S. Caregivers have been RAVING about this!  Just a few quotes:

"I was thrilled that you addressed several things that I deal with daily..." -Suzanne Hudson, LPN

"...Being able to have some practical ways to stop my husband's sundowning has been a game changer." -Roberta Ramell

"...actually hearing things laid out really put things into perspective.  Thank you!" -Lisa Freedmont

Spaces are limited, and I can only do a couple big events like this per year.  Don't miss out, sign up today.

Care Connection Webinar: Lewy What? What is Lewy body dementia and how do you, healthcare professionals and caregivers, deal with it?

Norma Loeb, founder and executive director of the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center (LBDRC), will discuss Lewy body dementia symptoms, diagnosis and support.

Mary Lou Falcone, classic music publicist and former care partner, will share her first-hand point of view on what it’s like to be the caregiver for a loved one with LBD.

Guest speakers:

Norma Loeb is founder and Executive Director of the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center (LBDRC). Loeb’s knowledge and experience with Lewy body dementia (LBD) began with the personal care of her mother, Lillian, who had LBD for many years. Lil is the inspiration behind the founding of LBDRC. Norma has been facilitating the only New York Metro area LBD caregivers support groups since 2008. She also leads a national group for people living with LBD.

Mary Lou Falcone is an internationally known classical music publicist. Her late husband, the illustrator Nicky Zann who died from LBD in 2020, was the catalyst for her first book: I Didn’t See It Coming: Scenes of Love, Loss, and Lewy Body Dementia.

Stress Reduction and Resiliency Techniques for Care givers

Stress Reduction and Resiliency Techniques for Care givers

As caregivers of those with dementia, we learn to adjust to an undesirable reality. To do that, we master the art of drawing from our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual energy. However, we can start to run out of power and face a crisis ourselves. Together, we’ll look at practical ways to build resilience as care partners and manage the stress of caregiving.

This presentation is a collaboration between James L. West Center for Dementia Care and the Area Agency on Aging North Central Texas.

1.5 CE Hour is available for nusring, social work and LPC.
