Frequently Asked Questions
What is A Gift of Time?
We are a Georgetown-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, and their families. Through free programs, education, respite services, and support groups, we help families navigate the dementia journey with connection, dignity, and hope.
Who can participate in your programs?
We serve individuals living with MCI, early-stage dementia, and moderate dementia, as well as their family caregivers and care partners. Each of our programs is designed for a specific stage or need, and we're happy to help you determine which program is the best fit.
Do your programs cost anything?
No. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, grant funders, and community partners, all of our programs are provided free of charge to participating families.
What is Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)?
Mild Cognitive Impairment, or MCI, is a condition in which a person experiences changes in memory or thinking that are greater than expected with normal aging but do not significantly interfere with daily independence. Some individuals remain stable for years, while others may eventually develop dementia.
What is the Maintaining Memory Skills Program?
Our Maintaining Memory Skills (MMS) program is designed for individuals living with MCI or early-stage dementia. Through cognitive activities, discussion, social engagement, gentle movement, and educational opportunities, we help participants stay engaged, connected, and active.
What is the Maintaining Memory Skills Peer Support Group?
Our MMS Support Group provides a welcoming space for individuals living with MCI or early-stage dementia to connect with others who understand what they are experiencing. Participants share ideas, encouragement, challenges, and successes in a supportive peer environment.
What is respite care?
Our respite program provides family caregivers with a planned break while their loved one participates in meaningful activities in a safe, supportive environment. Many caregivers use this time to attend appointments, run errands, spend time with friends, or simply rest and recharge.
What happens during the respite program?
During our respite program, participants enjoy music, conversation, games, crafts, exercise, social activities, and lunch. We focus on creating opportunities for connection, purpose, joy, and engagement while supporting each participant's abilities and interests.
How do I know if my loved one is a good fit for your programs?
We begin with a conversation to learn about your loved one's needs, abilities, interests, and stage of cognitive change. Together, we'll determine which of our programs may provide the most meaningful and successful experience.
What is Camille's Memory Café?
Our Camille's Memory Café is a monthly gathering where individuals living with memory loss and their care partners can enjoy music, activities, conversation, and community. It is a welcoming, judgment-free environment where families can connect with others who understand their journey.
Do you offer support for caregivers?
Yes. We understand that dementia affects the entire family. We offer caregiver support groups, educational programs, resources, and opportunities to connect with others who understand both the challenges and rewards of caregiving.
What types of dementia do you serve?
We welcome individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, mixed dementia, and other forms of cognitive impairment.
Do participants need a diagnosis to attend?
Requirements vary by program. Some programs are designed specifically for individuals with MCI or dementia-related conditions. If you're unsure, we encourage you to contact us. We'll be happy to discuss your situation and help determine whether one of our programs may be a good fit.
Where are your programs located?
We offer programs throughout Georgetown, Texas, including the Carver Center for Families and the Georgetown Public Library. Locations vary by program.
